Egypt borders the Sahara desert which is the largest desert in the world and as a result most of the land is not suitable for farming.

To counter this, the Ancient Egyptians developed complex irrigation techniques that redirected some of the Nile to fields or away from cities depending on what they needed the water for.

When directed to fields, the Nile watered crops and brought fertile soils that enabled the Ancient Egyptians to engage in agriculture at a level that only few societies could manage at the time.
